MCLA + State Policy: How We Represent Members

MCLA tracks bills that impact curriculum, instruction, assessment and standards and proficiency implementation. We poll our members on upcoming bills and potential state policies and report the results to members, the Department of Education, and to the legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs.  Read more on our Leadership page.

Maine’s Curriculum Leader of the Year

Peter Lancia is Maine’s 2016 Curriculum Leader of the Year

Peter Lancia, Assistant Superintendent of the Westbrook School Department, was selected this week as Maine’s 2016 Curriculum Leader of the Year. Peter, Maine’s 2002 Teacher of the Year, “has the heart of a teacher” and leads from his heart.

“We make an impact on our students,” he says, “when we help our teachers grow.” Peter’s modeling and clear vision for proficiency-based teaching and learning means that all of Westbrook’s 451 teachers participate in regular and continuous professional development aligned with the district’s strategic plan. He’s created PLC’s, early release days, led school reconfiguration to support looping and ease student transitions across grades, and helps teachers use data to support special needs students, English Language Learners, and Title I and gifted and talented learners.

His tireless work to build partnerships with community organizations and elected officials brought new opportunities to Westbrook’s students (60% qualify for free and reduced meals and 14% are part of the district’s transient population), including the K-12 “summer slide” academy, full-day Head Start, and the Westbrook Children’s Cabinet.

In his spare time, Peter is active in ASCD at the state and national levels, serving as Maine ASCD’s past president, and teaches at the University of Southern Maine.

“Westbrook is extremely proud of Dr. Peter Lancia and all that he’s accomplished as a teacher, principal, and educational leader,” wrote Westbrook superintendent Marc Gousse in Peter’s nomination letter. So are we. The Maine Curriculum Leaders’ Association is looking forward to working with Peter as a board member in the coming year.
